SEO Advice for the Novice: Part I

When I first got my start in SEO, I didn’t know where to start or how to filter for the right information. I was fortunate to pick the right folks several times and through them I found other SEOs who knew what they were talking about.

I’ve been in the field for nearly ten years and it’s time for me to give back to the community.

I’ve taken the liberty of putting together a list of  articles which will help you on your path to SEO stardom. These articles are easy to understand and are sequenced in the same order that I learned them. Some articles are about SEO, other articles are about Marketing and Analytics. I will occasionally throw in a few books to help refine your understanding of SEO. I won’t give you anything technical.

My goal is to provide you with a very defensible skill set which will hold you in good stead as the years roll by. I strongly recommend reading each article and dropping a comment on that individual’s blog even if its just to express a simple thanks. It’s a good way to get an early start on building relationships with the right folks in your industry.

Some of these blogs no longer exist, in which case feel free to reach out to me in the comments and I’ll help you reach out to the author.

Here are the first five articles that gave me a leg up in the SEO game.

  1. True Internet Marketing Icons by Aaron Wall
  2. Marketing Driven SEO Strategy by Peter DaVangelo
  3. The Stunt Train SEO Marketing Manifesto by Todd Malicoat
  4. Warren Buffett’s Advice to SEOs by Andy Hagans
  5. Copywriting 101: Your Guide to Effective Copy by Brian Clark
